Black Gum Concept Art Page One and Inktober Day One – “Swift (Justice)”
[I suppose since this won’t be the usual panel-by-panel comic, we’ll call this Black Gum Issue 0, the “Black Gum Concept Art Book”]
Day One of Inktober! Swift — Ruthie Despirit aka Night, Night delivers swift justice!
To give new eyeballs some context, Black Gum is my newest superhero comic project, about a group of kids who develop powers after chewing Black Gum’s new line of Atomic Flavors! I’ve drawn a lot of concept art for it this year, and I’m working on a novelization first because, for me, the writing flow is easier than writing a [graphic novel] script. But I thought it was time I put some work into the visual side of story development.
I’ll be drawing highlights from the first planned story arc, with assists from @jakeparker‘s official prompts–so yeah, some of them might be a stretch–so I hope you’ll come along for the ride! Comments welcomed!
I probably won’t put so much “post production” in every piece, but since this one kicks off the month, I thought I should really jam it!
Ruthie Despirit is a latina teen, a shot putter in high school training for the Olympics. When she chewed the Black Gum Atomic Caramel, it imbued her with the ability to control and move through shadows. When her brother Ernesto gets involved with local gang the Eastsiders, Ruthie vows to do her part to clean up her town, becoming the vigilante Night, Night!
