Concept Art done on my Samsung Galaxy Reverb based on this month’s theme prompt suggestion, “weird western.”

Hosted by Clovis Book Barn, Coordinated by the Fresno Scifi & Fantasy Writers, Open Mic Night is a free, family friendly event open to the public. Fiction, Poetry, Music or Comedy welcome! Whether you’re on stage or in the audience, you’re sure to have a great time! This month’s totally optional theme is “weird western” — any style, any genre having to do with cowboys, Native Americans, the pioneering spirit, horses, wagons, gambling, etc. with maybe some supernatural or sci-fi elements. This could be a night of adventure and a celebration of all things West!

Here’s a teaser of a piece of flash fiction I’ll be reading at the event. So far, it’s called “Cowbird and Cactus”:

The cowbird rode atop her purple hipposteed across a vast desert with canyon walls rising high in the distance and a red sun shooting its rays through chemical clouds. Her silver stetson down low and a filter mask drawn tightly over her impressive beak, she tugged at the collar of her brown, beaten leather duster and kicked the spurs of her talon boots against the sides of her mount, urging her to continue their progress through a heat so thick, that it was like moving through a fog made up of coal dust.

She came to a crossroad. Down her right, a break in a canyon wall, which could mean a river. Down her left, a slow rise to a flat horizon with dark clouds above it, which could be pollutants from a city. Directly in front of her stood a nine foot tall, green and yellow cactus with two arms twisting skyward and protrusions on the ends that resembled stubby fingers. Not too far up its central stalk, protrusions that made her brain believe she was looking into a face. It was assymmetrical and knobby, but the more she stared at it, the more she saw–

“You see a face. It’s not your imagination,” the cactus spoke. And suddenly it had eyes, opened under heavy lids and a prickly brow. “It’s my face.”
